Anatomy of an Attack

Gather Sensitive Information:

After a rootkit has been installed and the hacker can return to the site any time without fear of discovery, they can gather any sensitive information on the server. Data easily discovered includes anything on the server such as company secrets, intellectual property, source code, databases of customer records or lists of employee records.

The hacker may also use the compromised server as a launch site for future attacks. By further buffering the attack from the initial computer used to launch the attack the hacker can slow down the administrator's ability to trace the attack in progress.
